Beginning in the late 1990’s, Macedonia’s wine industry entered a decade of intensive developments in grape growing and wine making with new wineries being built, old ones restructured, and leading producers and wine makers committing to put Macedonia on the international wine map. This has resulted in the devotion to quality and a sincere desire to offer our unique wines to the world’s consumers – to continuously improve and enhance the image of our wines. Currently, wines from the Republic of Macedonia are distributed throughout most of the EU and all countries of the Balkans, making wine Macedonia’s second most important export product.
Currently there are 24,700 hectares of vineyards managed by 15, 000 grape growing families and wine producers who make wines from international varietals and indigenous grapes.

Today’s wine production in Macedonia takes place in officially 84 registered wineries with a total capacity of 1.2 mill hl. The geographical representation of wineries is identical to the representation of vineyards, so most wine cellars are located in the central region, along the valley of River Vardar, primarily in the Skopje, Veles, Tikveš, Gevgelija-Valandovo wine districts.
